Les JOs (Jeux Olympiques) à Paris!
Excitement is building as the world prepares to tune in for the Olympic Games in Paris, returning to the City of Light for the first time in a century. The countdown to the opening ceremony on Friday, July 26th is filled with anticipation and a sense of history in the making. The French have meticulously planned every detail, aiming to host the most eco-friendly and sustainable Olympics in history. This year’s "Fête Nationale" on July 14th was particularly special as the Olympic torch arrived in Paris amidst a wave of celebration and national pride. The atmosphere was abuzz with excitement – Merveilleux!
Iconic Venues and Unforgettable Backdrops
The city’s iconic landmarks will serve as breathtaking backdrops for various sports. Imagine the Eiffel Tower looming majestically over the beach volleyball court, or the grandeur of the Grand Palais setting the stage for fencing and taekwondo. Equestrian events will take place on the opulent grounds of Versailles, while archery will be held on the lawn of the historic Hôtel des Invalides, home to Napoleon's tomb.

I witnessed the preparations firsthand during my recent trip to Paris. Spectator stands were being erected, and the city was filled with activity. Tennis fans will flock to Roland-Garros, which will also host boxing matches. The Place de la Concorde, at the end of the Champs-Élysées, will be the venue for the historic debut of breakdancing in the Olympics, as well as the opening ceremony of the Paralympics.
Controversy and Commitment
Perhaps the most talked-about venue is the Seine River, where the triathlon and other open-swim events are scheduled. In a bold move, Mayor Anne Hidalgo herself took a swim today in the river to prove its cleanliness, although some Parisians remain skeptical. There are even rumors of protests against Hidalgo involving an unsanitary sabotage of the river according to many of my French friends!
All events are strategically located near public transportation, with additional rentable bikes to ensure spectators can easily navigate the city. This focus on accessibility and sustainability spotlights Paris's commitment to eco-friendly solutions.
Opening Ceremony by the Seine
The opening ceremony promises to be a spectacle like no other. Delegations will arrive by boat on the Seine, with spectators seated along the riverbanks rather than in a traditional stadium. Temporary constructions for the event are being built from recycled and eco-friendly materials, aligning with the ambitious goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.
Sustainable Living for Athletes
The Olympic Village, situated in the suburbs of Paris, has been constructed with an eye towards sustainability. The accommodations, which will later serve as affordable housing, are furnished with eco-friendly materials, including beds made from cardboard – a novel idea that is sure to garner reactions from the athletes!
Paris has also dedicated years to perfecting the culinary offerings for the Games. A Michelin-starred chef has collaborated with local farms to create menus that meet sustainability standards and promise to delight athletes and guests alike. What I wouldn't give to sit down to hear athletes’ stories while sampling these exquisite meals!
Beyond Paris
While Paris is the heart of the Games, events will be spread across various locations. Surfing will take place in the idyllic waves of Tahiti, basketball in Lille as well as Paris, sailing in the Mediterranean city of Marseille, and soccer in multiple cities across Europe. This widespread approach not only showcases the diversity of France but also spreads the Olympic spirit far and wide.

The Mascot and the Logo
The Games’ mascots, two charming phryges, symbolize the revolutionary spirit and the values of liberty, fraternity, and equality, echoing the famous painting “Liberty Leading the People.” The logo, a modern depiction of Marianne – the personification of the French Republic – cleverly integrates the Olympic flame, embodying both tradition and innovation.
Inspiration for the Classroom
As the school year approaches, I am invigorated by the Olympic excitement. I’m planning a special unit, complete with a display and prizes, to welcome my French students back for the 2024-2025 school year. Bonne rentrée à tous bientôt! (Welcome back to school to all soon!)
Cheers,
Beth
